Tethered galaxies and the expanding space paradigm

چکیده

I examine the counterintuitive claim from Davis et.al. [1] that a stationary or receding galaxy in an expanding universe may exhibit blueshift, even when the universe contains no gravitating matter. I show that with more precise calculations the effect disappears for the empty universe. I also discuss how this is related to the currently popular idea of ‘expanding space’, looking at how this idea arose, and why I think it has serious flaws. 1 Special and General relativity In 1908 Hermann Minkowski claimed Henceforth space by itself, and time by itself, are doomed to fade away into mere shadows, and only a kind of union of the two will preserve an independent reality But it didn’t happen. In cosmology today the favorite explanation of the expansion of the universe is the balloon model, where space is compared to the rubber surface of a balloon and the proper time of comoving objects is taken as the time coordinate for the universe. Far from fading into obscurity, space now has an almost tangible representation. So how did this happen? Well if you asked the question on an internet forum, then the answer would be straightforward. Minkowski was talking about special relativity, but the large scale behaviour of the universe is not governed ∗[email protected]

Solutions to the tethered galaxy problem in an expanding universe and the observation of receding blueshifted objects

We use the dynamics of a galaxy, set up initially at a constant proper distance from an observer, to derive and illustrate two counter-intuitive general relativistic results. Although the galaxy does gradually join the expansion of the universe ~Hubble flow!, it does not necessarily recede from us. In particular, in the currently favored cosmological model, which includes a cosmological constan...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

مدل‌سازی دینامیکی و کنترل ربات فضایی متصل به تتر

In present study, dynamic modeling and control of a tethered space robot system in trajectory tracking of its end effector is investigated. Considering variation of the tether length in the model, dynamics of the system is modeled using Lagrange’s method. Librational motion of the tether is controlled by adjusting the tether length similar to conventional manipulators, control of the robot...

Visual stimulation of saccades in magnetically tethered Drosophila.

Flying fruit flies, Drosophila melanogaster, perform ;body saccades', in which they change heading by about 90 degrees in roughly 70 ms. In free flight, visual expansion can evoke saccades, and saccade-like turns are triggered by similar stimuli in tethered flies. However, because the fictive turns in rigidly tethered flies follow a much longer time course, the extent to which these two behavio...
